Briefly describe your graduate project: The goal of my research
is to help understand the oceanographic processes that may affect larval
advection or retention of Dungeness crabs in southeastern Alaska (GC/03-01).
My research examines whether Dungeness crab larvae hatching in Glacier
Bay and adjacent areas are advected from inland waters into the Gulf
of Alaska, or whether they complete larval development within embayments.
My research also helps the understanding of the mechanism of larval dispersal
between local subpopulations of Dungeness crab in Glacier Bay and its
neighboring straits associated with local hydrographic features. This
will evaluate the effect of Glacier Bay as a marine reserve.
In addition, my research examines the relationship between interannual variation
of larval abundance and the population of Dungeness crab, and between interannual
variations of larval abundance and global scale climate changes.
