Summary

The authors developed an age-structure assessment model to forecast abundance of herring returning to Norton Sound, Alaska, which can be used as a tool for fisheries management. The history of the Norton Sound herring fishery indicates a need for this management tool: In 1979 purse seiners moved into Norton Sound, but because local gillnetters and beach seiners could not compete with them, the purse seiners were excluded by 1981. Later, in 1992, the herring gillnet fishery could not be opened because of late-thawing pack ice. Alaska Fishery Research Bulletin 4(2):87-109, 1997.
