Alaska Seafood Industry Survey Results
Description
To help Alaska Sea Grant stay tuned to people in the Alaska seafood industry, in 1995-96 we mailed surveys to nearshore commercial fishermen, groundfish fishing companies, and processors. Most respondents offered comments on what should be done to boost the state's share of world seafood markets and what training they need to succeed in a competitive marketplace. Commercial fishermen asked for workshops on seafood marketing, training to use new shipboard technologies, and help in using the Internet. In response to a question about research needed from the University of Alaska, seafood processors suggested waste utilization and development of underutilized fisheries. Overfishing, habitat destruction, and poor management are the most common concerns.
